Hersh Shukla

MPT, Cert. MDT

President, Physical Therapist

I grew up in South Central Pennsylvania as a student in the West Shore School District. After graduating from Red Land High School, I went to study Physical Therapy at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (formerly the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science). Upon receiving my degree and license to practice Physical Therapy, I went to work at an office in the Harrisburg area. After about five years, I opened Orthopedic & Spine Physical Therapy in Carlisle, PA (November 2004). Since that time, I have enjoyed helping people in the Carlisle community get back to normal naturally, without the use of unnecessary medications, injections and surgeries.

I’ve been a Physical Therapist since 1999. I have devoted my entire career to learning how the body moves, identifying movement problems, and figuring out what movement activies (exercises, hands on treatments, etc) are needed to correct those problems. This is the way to truly help people heal naturally. I am a Certified McKenzie Therapist, which gives me a framework for evaluating a treatment patients who are dealing with pain.

The core values that drive my life are listening, helping others with no expectation of anything in return, getting back up, respecting differences, and being humble.

Here at Orthopedic & Spine Physical Therapy (OSPT), I am the President of the company. I manage all areas of the business (operations, marketing, billing, etc). I also treat patients nearly full-time.

I most enjoy helping to relieve patients’ back pain, hip pain, knee pain, heel pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and elbow pain. I would also love to help fix the broken healthcare system our patients have to deal with (wink, wink!).

What is Dr. Hersh Watching, Reading, or Listening to?

  • The Shawshank Redemption (Movie)
  • Simon Sinek (Podcast)
  • The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday (Book)

When I’m not in the office, I enjoy spending time with my family, playing golf, and traveling.

Patient Testimonials

“I had serious left ankle surgery on 12/28/2021. Following recovery, I had physical therapy to strengthen and improve my function. I had excellent results from the care I received at OSPT. The entire staff was professional, caring, and friendly. I knew it would require time and effort to get back to my pre-injury state, as my surgeon indicated it may take 12-18 months. I am pleased to report within 6 months I felt like my old self, and now at the 1-year mark, I am 100 % back to all my activities. I ski, bike, and also run daily on the treadmill. Hersh and Andrea are exceptional! Their caring yet persistent demeanor kept me on task and encouraged my progress. I cannot thank them enough and highly recommend OSPT for your physical therapy needs.”

After 6 wks of therapy with Hersh, following a time when I thought I’d live my remaining life in some pain, I am amazed and grateful. My rotator cuff was impinged and inflamed by bones improperly placed and poor muscle strength. Now, my bones are repositioned and I’m well on my way, with a new understanding, to maintaining proper movement and exercise to support my wellness! Though I have always exercised, I have never done precisely those things I needed to do because I just didn’t know. This is a holistic practice built on a very specific analysis of each unique set of issues, with treatment and education toward optimizing the quality of life. I highly recommend it!”

“I came to OSPT thinking that I was soon going to be a candidate for shoulder surgery due to the pain I was experiencing. After consultation with Hersh, I was told that he was certain that my pain could be relieved and I would have more motion in my shoulder through physical therapy. After 13 sessions with Joe, I am thrilled to report that I am more than 90% pain-free and have considerably more range of motion in my shoulder. I highly recommend OSPT for any of your physical therapy needs. They are professional, friendly, and really care about helping you on your road to better health.”
