Physical Therapy for Headaches in Carlisle PA
There are several different types of headaches. Not all of them are successfully treatable by Physical Therapists. The one type that responds the best to our treatment is the Tension Headache. It usually occurs on one side of the head and comes and goes based on activities that you do. These types of headaches typically do well with treatment of the neck and muscle areas near the base of the skull.
Headaches can really cause problems getting through your day. Often people with headaches need to find a dark, quiet place to lie down in until the headache goes away. Let’s face it, that’s no way to live. If you’re wondering about headache treatment at OSPT, give our office a call and schedule an appointment.
Neck/Middle of the Back
Physical Therapy for the Neck and Middle Back in Carlisle PAThe neck is a common area of problems for people who drive a lot, sit at a computer for most of their work day, read a lot, watch TV while in bed, and of course for those who were in a car accident. Most of the time, neck and middle back pain can be quickly reduced and fixed with the right approach to getting the neck and middle back to move like they were meant to move. The loss of normal movement is likely the cause of the problem. Do this simple test:
- Look up as far as you can
- Look left as far as you can
- Look right as far as you can
- Look down as far as you can
- Raise your right arm up as high as you can, so your upper arm touches your ear
- Raise your left arm up as high as you can, so your upper arm touches your ear
Physical Therapy for the Shoulder in Carlisle PA
The shoulder is the most complex joint in the body. It has the most movement available out of all the joints. And because of that, it is the most unstable joint in the body. The shoulder joint is actually a group of joints made up by three separate bones. They are the humerus (arm bone), the scapula (shoulder blade) and the clavicle (collar bone). The ribs and the neck bones also can be linked to shoulder pain, but less often.
In order for treatment to be successful for shoulder pain, we must make sure that all of the moving parts of the shoulder are doing what they are supposed to do. This is the only way that activities like reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling can happen in a pain-free way. We accomplish this by using hands-on therapy activities and exercises for the joints, the rotator cuff (four different muscles that surround the shoulder), and other muscle groups around the shoulder. Without focusing on these areas, the shoulder will likely continue to move in a way that causes pinching, overuse and unwanted stress to pain-sensitive areas.
Physical Therapy for the Elbow, Wrist, and Hand in Carlisle PA
Without realizing it, we use our elbows, wrists and hands to do almost everything. You don’t realize it until one of those areas has a pain in it. That’s why most injuries to these areas are called “overuse injuries.” But overuse injuries don’t really happen without some other problem contributing as well. In this area of the body, strength and normal joint movement are everything.
Our evaluation process will help us identify where the problem areas are so we can design a program using hands-on techniques and proper therapy exercises to eliminate those problems. With this type of focused approach to your problem, you’ll be able to get back to doing the things you love in no time at all.
Physical Therapy for Lower Back Pain and Sciatica in Carlisle PA
- Do you suffer from back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk?
- Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive?
- Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your legs?
- Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way?
- Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it?
- It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store…
- It can take your focus away from enjoying your life, like spending time with your children or grandchildren…
- It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do…
- It can ruin your travel plans…
- And it can take away your ability to live life, having to rely on others, or making them wait for you to sit down for a minute.
- And less movement and enjoyment of life leads to depression, increased stress, and a more sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting and not moving much), which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems.
Physical Therapy for the Hip in Carlisle PA
The hip joint and all of the joints, muscles and tendons around it are a common source of pain, especially in people that do jobs where they are on their feet for a while, or runners, or even those with arthritis in their hips. It can also happen for no apparent reason at all. Most people with hip pain have trouble walking, rising from a seated position (especially on a soft couch), lying on the painful side, climbing stairs, getting up from the floor, and even with just sitting or standing in more severe cases.
Most of the time an x-ray for the hip joint will be ordered and it will show hip joint arthritis. It’s okay for this to be on your x-ray. Let me repeat that. It’s okay for your hip x-ray to show hip joint arthritis. It doesn’t mean that you need a hip replacement. It means that your hip has stopped moving normally because of the changes on the x-ray. With hip therapy as OSPT, we can likely get that movement back for you and help you regain the ability to live your normal life again. This requires hands-on therapy techniques and exercises to make the joints function like they were built to function. More severe cases of arthritis may require longer treatment, but anything to avoid surgery!
Physical Therapy for the Knee in Carlisle PA
From young athletes with knee injuries on the field to knee replacements, we have seen everything. The knee only does two things. It bends and it straightens, right? Well, when you lose the ability to FULLY bend and FULLY straighten your knee, pain and limited function is not too far behind.
The first order of business when it comes to physical therapy for the knee is to gain full bending and straightening movement. Once full straightening is achieved (most important), then the quadriceps muscle (muscle on the front of the thigh) must be strengthened. Then comes strengthening of all other muscles and retraining you to walk/run/jump and do other things that are important to you.
Physical Therapy for the Ankle and Foot in Carlisle PA
The ankles and feet have to carry the entire weight of your body. Half of your standing life is spent on each one! That’s a lot of responsibility. If the muscles around the ankles and feet are not strong enough to support that weight, then pain will occur.
Our evaluation process includes a proper examination of the foot both while you are standing and while you are not putting weight on your feet. This, along with several other tests and measures, is the only way to really get to the bottom of the problem causing your foot or ankle pain. Once we know how the foot moves, we can design a program to fix it using hands-on techniques and focused exercises to gain strength, function, and to get you back to doing things on your feet without having to sit down because of pain.
Other Painful AreasThere are other areas your pains can live in, like in your forearms or in your thigh muscles. This can be anything from sprains and strains to muscle soreness from overuse. It can also be something related to how your body moves. If you have a painful area that is not listed on our services page, then give us a call and we can help you get to the bottom of why it’s there and what we can do to help you.
